For Phil Souza, working with heat pumps isn’t just about what they do for a home. It’s about what the work provides: stability for him and his growing family.
Phil didn’t always work in HVAC. In 2024, he and his wife moved to Colorado from Southern California, where he had been working for an RV rental business. He enjoyed the work, but as the seasons changed, so did the demand. Winters were slow, and having just started a family, Phil knew he needed something more reliable.
That’s when he decided to learn a trade.
“HVAC is always needed. It’s a great industry.”
Phil found an entry point into HVAC through CrossPurpose, a local nonprofit with a free workforce training program. It was a practical decision, and one backed by encouragement from the people around him. “HVAC is always needed,” he says. “It’s a great industry.” After completing the program, he continued building his skills through heat pump training with Johnstone Supply, moving quickly from learning the fundamentals to applying them in the field.
Less than a year after deciding to change careers, Phil was hired as a heat pump installer.
Now, just a few months into the job, he’s focused on learning everything he can. Each install is a chance to build confidence, contribute to the crew, and get one step closer to where he wants to go. “Working with a crew is really fun,” he says. “Everyone is great.” For Phil, it’s not just about the technical side, but about being part of a team and showing up for customers the right way.
That mindset carries through in how he approaches the work. He takes pride in being a positive, helpful presence in people’s homes, making sure the job is done right and that customers feel comfortable every step of the way.
“I would definitely recommend this career.”
While he’s still early in his career, Phil already sees what’s ahead. HVAC, and heat pumps in particular, offer room to grow, specialize, and build a skill set that can take him anywhere. It’s a long-term path, not just a short-term fix. And, it’s AI-proof. After all, AI can’t install a heat pump system. “I would definitely recommend this career,” he says.
Outside of work, Phil is already giving back. He’s serving as a mentor for the next class of students at CrossPurpose, the same program that helped him get started. For him, it’s a chance to support others who are looking for that same turning point.
Because for Phil, this isn’t just a new job. It’s a new direction that offers stability today and opportunity for years to come.
